Join the comic club and learn how to make your very own comics! Taught by José Alaniz, local comic artist and Comic Studies professor at the University of Washington, and Kristin Tolliver, local educator, this workshop will give you the tools to bring your comic ideas to life in a fun, hands on environment. Whether you’re an aspiring artist or just love comics, this workshop will guide you step-by-step in creating your very own short comic. No experience necessary—just bring your imagination!

José Alaniz, professor in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures and the Department of Cinema and Media Studies (adjunct) at the University of Washington, Seattle, has published academic books on Russian/Eastern European comics, disability in comics and superheroes. He also makes comics, including for the collections The Phantom Zone and Other Stories (Amatl Comix, 2020), The Compleat Moscow Calling (Amatl, 2023) and Puro Pinche True Fictions (2023, FlowerSong Press).

Kristin Tolliver has a BA in Russian Studies from Evergreen State College. Her work experience includes barista, animal shelter caregiver and tutor for children with learning disabilities. She loves to sing, entertain and nurture. She lives blissfully in a forest homestead with many animals in Longbranch, WA.
