Get ready to have a raucous, bawdy good time! We’re serving up a trio of some oldies but goodies.
Plays and playing were different things in medieval times. And yet, so similar to what we experience today. The imagination is key. And the willingness to suspend your disbelief. With that, a few props, and some actors, all the world truly was, or could be, a stage. What better way to entertain the poor, overworked, and often hungry masses than by giving them some comic relief.
The Very Good and Extremely Merry Joke of the Washtub: funny what a bit of role-reversal can do toward getting the daily chores done.
The Second Shepherd’s Play: some shepherds, a few sheep, a thief, his wife, a diversion, and an angel—that spells comedy.
The Troublesome Olives: beware the price you put on your daydreams—or rather beware the price of neighborly bliss.
