MANAGING DIRECTOR

The Managing Director reports to the Board and works closely with Linda Hartzell, the Theatre’s Artistic Director. The Managing Director directly supervises the Directors of Development/Marketing, Finance, IT, Education and Patron Services/Facilities. The Managing Director, in conjunction with the Artistic Director and respective senior staff members, supports several Board committees including Executive, Finance, Board Operations, Audience Development and Development.

The Managing Director is the senior operating and financial officer and, together with the Artistic Director, acts as a public spokesperson and community liaison. The Managing Director also provides leadership and direction to key company activities including finance and administration, communications, marketing, development / annual fundraising and capital / endowment campaigns. S/he has principal oversight for the day-to-day operation of the company and is responsible for promoting a positive, collaborative and open work environment, with high performance standards.

The Managing Director shares responsibility with the Artistic Director and the Board for achieving the company’s goals. S/he also actively supports the Artistic Director and the artistic and educational staff in accomplishing the company’s educational and artistic goals.

Responsibilities:

  • Works on behalf of – and delivers excellent service for – the Theatre’s key constituencies: its art, its financial health, its donors and patrons, its staff and its Board.
  • Works collaboratively with the Artistic Director to ensure that the company will accomplish its short and long-term institutional goals, both artistic and financial.
  • Collaborates with the Artistic Director and senior staff on short and long-term strategic planning for SCT in general and for fundraising, audience development, production and education, in particular.
  • Provides management and oversight for SCT’s day-to-day operations.
  • Develops and implements strategies to achieve earned and contributed income goals.
  • Actively participates in all fundraising activities including donor cultivation and solicitation, special events planning and attending SCT events. Works closely with Development staff to develop both strategic and tactical fundraising plans.
  • Works with the Finance Committee and staff to maintain the company’s financial health and stability.
  • Collaborates with the Artistic Director, staff and Board to develop and approve the company’s annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Oversees financial management and controls including the development, implementation, monitoring and reporting of annual operating budget and capital and endowment fund activities.
  • Generates, monitors and reports on business contracts.
  • Collaborates with the Artistic Director in the hiring of senior level staff.
  • Leads negotiations with union representatives.
  • Works closely with and is accountable to the Board of Directors for financial and day-to-day operational activities.
  • Attends all Board and appropriate Board committee meetings. Works with the Artistic Director and the Board President to set agendas and facilitate the work of the Board.
  • Represents and promotes SCT in regional and national communities through Board and panel services, public speaking, attending conferences and general networking.

Qualifications:


    Ideally, candidates for this position should have:

  • Strong leadership and a track record of accomplishment in teambuilding, interpersonal and communication skills. A clear ability to encourage, engage and energize both Board and staff members, artists, volunteers, donors and audiences.
  • Five or more years of successful management/leadership experience within a theatre company or similar not-for-profit performing arts organization, of similar size and budget to SCT. While managing director experience is preferred, other management experience could include a key department head, general manager or similar.
  • Considerable fundraising ability including direct foundation, corporate and individual solicitation and familiarity with various fundraising techniques, including those employed in major operating and capital campaigns.
  • Ability to lead and manage a complex, creative organization.
  • Experience in not-for-profit fiscal management and the skills needed to promote and protect the financial well-being of the company.
  • Experience in leading union negotiations and in achieving results that are viewed as win-win outcomes.
  • Experience in marketing performances and ancillary activities to the public. A willingness to explore and create new initiatives that provide appropriate support and visibility to the organization.
  • A sincere interest in and appreciation for collaboration with other arts, cultural and community organizations.
  • Energy, stamina, flexibility and the willingness and interest to fully engage in the life and activities of the Theatre and in the greater Seattle region.

    Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience. A comprehensive benefit package will be provided.

    Start Date:


      The position is presently filled by Tim Jennings, who will be leaving SCT in February. The company wishes to identify the new Managing Director as early as possible.

      Internships

      SUMMER 2012 INTERNSHIPS

      EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: BA preferred (minimum of two years of college required).

      STIPEND: $140 per full-time week

      EDUCATION INTERNS

      Each summer about 14 Education Interns provide teaching assistance and administrative support to instructors teaching a wide variety of theatre classes and performance programs to students ages 3 to 21. These internships are ideal for those with an interest in arts education.

      ADMINISTRATIVE INTERN

      Responsibilities include customer service and communication, schedule and database management, and general program support. The Administrative Intern will also provide teaching assistance and administrative support to instructors. This internship is ideal for those with an interest in production or business management for the arts.

      PUBLIC RELATIONS AND MARKETING INTERN

      This internship is responsible for facilitating a PR and Marketing campaign for the SCT Drama School Summer Season productions, which feature performances from 4th - 12th grade students.

      DATES:
      Mid-June through the end of August. This position includes 25 to 30 hour work weeks, with flexible hours.

      STAGE MANAGEMENT INTERNS

      Each summer, Seattle Children's Theatre Drama School produces several plays in the Charlotte Martin Theatre at SCT. These productions are for student actors, directed by teaching artists, and designed/produced by professional designers and SCT staff. We hire 3 stage management interns who are responsible for technical rehearsals and calling the shows.

      Late-June/Early-July to the end of August

      UNPAID TECHNICAL ASSISTANTSHIPS

      Assistants are trained to run shows and perform basic stage maintenance by a professional IATSE union crew mentor. All assistants gain hands-on enxperience working in both the Charlotte Martin and Eve Alvord Theatres, and in our technical pavilion. Positions are available in the following areas:

    • Stage Carpentry: Assist the Technical Director and Stage Technician with assembling and building the scenic elements for each show. Acts as stagehand during performances.

    • Costume Design and Construction: Assists the Costume Designer with assembling, building and pulling costumes for each show. May act as a dresser for performances as needed.

    • Property Design and Construction: Assists the Props Master with assembling, building and pulling props for each show. May be asked to work on backstage crew as needed.

    • Electrics: Assists the Lighting Designer/ Master Electrician with the hang and focus of the lighting design. Programming and running the ETC Obsession 2 light board for rehearsals and performances.

    • Sound: Assists the Sound Designer with installation and maintenance, technical rehearsals and performances using SFX software and live mics.


      DATES:

      Late-June to mid-August. Most Assistantships are full time (30-40 hrs/week), although this may vary depending on the demands of each show.


      EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

      High school or college age students. Previous backstage experience is required.
