Endowment Fund

What is an endowment?

Endowments are permanently invested funds that produce annual income to support a designated program. Funds donated to an endowment are invested, and the earnings on those funds are used to support the program. Endowments are of particular importance because they provide an ongoing source of income for the future, buffering the effects of an unpredictable economy.

Why a Seattle Children's Theatre endowment?

The level and quality of future SCT Mainstage productions and outreach programming will depend on the SCT Endowment Campaign. The success of the endowment will help ensure that SCT is able to continue our programming at its current level and grow for the future.

How will the endowment affect me?

Seattle Children's Theatre is the only fully professional, Equity theatre for young audiences in the Puget Sound region. A successful endowment ensures the continuation of SCT's commitment to accessibility, script development, and production and organizational excellence.

What is the focus of the endowment?

  1. Maintain accessible prices for school/show audiences and offset the subsidy we provide from our annual budget
Engagement in the arts nurtures the development of cognitive, social, and personal capabilities. To ensure that our school performances are accessible to all children, Seattle Children's Theatre provides discounts on tickets to schoolchildren and teachers. In addition, SCT provides over 4,000 free tickets annually to students who qualify for the federally funded free and reduced price lunch program. Last year, the cost of this subsidy totaled nearly $1 million. We can no longer provide this level of subsidy from our annual budget without sacrificing one tenet of our mission for another.
  2. Provide ongoing support for the development of new works
Seattle Children's Theatre is committed to improving and expanding the body of dramatic literature for young people by developing new plays based on both original ideas and award-winning children's literature. No other American professional theatre for young audiences has commissioned as many new works as SCT. A number of these scripts go on to be produced by other theatres across the country. SCT's focus in this area has raised the standard of dramatic literature for young audiences in this country for over thirty years.
  3. Enhance production budgets
Lively, engaging, professionally produced theatre offers young people an opportunity to experience the thrill of theatre as a living art form. The ability to hire designers, directors, performers, and crew, who are at the top of their fields, at a competitive salary is essential to producing the professional, high-quality theatre SCT's audiences have come to expect and demand.
  4. Maintain and enhance organizational excellence and educational outreach programs
The educational programs and services offered at Seattle Children's Theatre are as important as the Mainstage productions. The year-round Drama School and Education Outreach programs provide theatre-based enrichment of the highest caliber to thousands of young people.
