Tomás and the Library Lady, which offers a glimpse into the childhood of acclaimed author and educator Tomás Rivera, was written by José Cruz González and is based on the book by Pat Mora

Tomás Rivera was the child of Mexican migrant farm workers who, through his strong belief in education, became an award-winning novelist and a nationally-recognized educator, going on to become the first Mexican-American chancellor in the University of California system. Tomás and the Library Lady draws on Rivera’s early life, when, unable to read English, Tomás was terrified of school. The cast of Tomás and the Library Lady is a duo comprised of a long-time Seattle favorite and debuting talent. Amy Thone most recently appeared at SCT in 2008’s Hamlet, and her local credits include work at Seattle Rep, Intiman and Book-It. Thone won a 2007 Stranger Genius Award for Theatre, is Artistic Associate/Casting Director at Seattle Shakespeare Company, and is a founding member of New Century Theatre Company. Opposite Thone is Israel Jiménez, making his SCT debut. Jiménez performed in Childsplay’s national tour of Tomás and is a member of Chilsplay’s company. Ben Gonio and Morgan Rowe are understudies.

Director Saar is the Founder and Artistic Director of Childsplay, an award-winning professional theatre company for young audiences and families. Based in Tempe, Arizona, since 1977, Childsplay has achieved a national reputation in the field. Saar has previously directed A Year with Frog and Toad, Charlotte's Web and The Yellow Boatfor Seattle Children's Theatre. He is a former board member of TYA/USA and is a member of the American Association for Theatre and Education. In 1989, he received the Governor’s Arts Award for his contributions to the arts in Arizona, in 1991 he was the recipient of the national Winifred Ward Dare to Dream Fellowship, and in 1993 he received the Phoenix Futures Forum Dream Weavers Vision award. In 2002, he received the first Notable Achievement Award from the Herberger College of Fine Arts at ASU. In March 2007, he was awarded the prestigious Thomas DeGaetani Award from the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT).

Saar is joined by Director’s Assistant Brian Fahey, Projection Designer and SCT Technical Director Michael K. Hase, Projection Designer Anthony Runfola, SCT Resident Sound Designer Chris R. Walker, Set and Costume Designer Holly Wingdingstad, and Lighting Designer Tim Wratten.
